President Biden signed the first whole-of-government US executive order on crypto, directing roughly a dozen agencies to produce reports on regulation, consumer protection, financial stability, and a possible US central bank digital currency. It set a federal policy agenda but, in keeping with executive-order tradition, mostly commissioned homework rather than rules — and was quietly repealed by a Trump order in January 2025.
