On March 13, 2024, Ethereum's Dencun hard fork went live at epoch 269568, introducing EIP-4844's "blob" transactions and giving layer-2 rollups a dedicated, cheaper lane for posting data. L2 fees promptly fell by orders of magnitude, vindicating Ethereum's bet that scaling would happen on rollups rather than the base layer.
