On 25 October 2017, OneCoin founder Ruja Ignatova boarded a Ryanair flight from Sofia to Athens and was never seen again, just as US prosecutors were closing in on what they alleged was a roughly $4 billion global Ponzi scheme dressed up as a cryptocurrency. OneCoin never had a real blockchain, which did little to slow recruitment; Ignatova has since landed on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list with a reward that has climbed to $5 million. Theories about her fate range from comfortable exile to a 2018 murder, and law enforcement still cannot say which.
