On January 14, 2019, Canada's largest crypto exchange QuadrigaCX announced that its founder Gerald Cotten had died in India the previous month, supposedly taking with him the only keys to the cold wallets holding customers' money. A later OSC investigation found there were no missing wallets to speak of: Cotten had been running the platform as a Ponzi scheme, and most of the roughly C$190M shortfall came from his own fraudulent trading rather than a deceased man's forgotten passwords.
