On April 20, 2021, Turkey's then-largest crypto exchange Thodex abruptly halted trading citing a "cyberattack," and founder Faruk Fatih Ozer promptly boarded a flight to Albania, leaving roughly 391,000 users locked out of their accounts. Loss estimates ranged wildly from the prosecutor's $13 million to media figures of $2 billion, and Ozer was ultimately extradited and sentenced to 11,196 years in prison — a number that, generously, outlives the appeal he eventually won.
