On July 20, 2016, at block 1,920,000, Ethereum executed a contentious hard fork to claw back the ~3.6M ETH drained in the DAO hack and refund holders. A minority who held that "code is law" refused to update and kept mining the un-forked chain, which became Ethereum Classic — proving that the cleanest way to settle a governance dispute is to have both sides win on separate ledgers.
