On 30 July 2015, the Ethereum genesis block was mined, bringing the Frontier release of the network live and giving the world its first general-purpose, programmable smart-contract blockchain. It was a bare-bones, developer-oriented launch, but it seeded the entire smart-contract platform category and, eventually, an industry's worth of things to put on a timeline like this one.
