On June 17, 2016, an attacker exploited a reentrancy bug in The DAO's withdrawal logic, recursively draining roughly 3.6 million ETH (about $60M at the time) before balances updated. The resulting crisis split the community over whether to bail out the funds, ultimately forcing the hard fork that birthed Ethereum and Ethereum Classic. It remains the textbook case study for smart-contract security and the perils of "code is law."
